April 11, 2009

Boy have I been busy the last few days.  That's what spring is all about.  It's part of the fun of gardening!

I wanted to share Saturday with you, but before I do, I thought I'd throw out some pics of potting up my teacher's seedlings.  I didn't get a chance to post about them, and wanted to share, so I'll be quick about it.

You think these are root bound?  Hehe, this is what they all looked like coming out of the little 9 ounce cups before I potted them up.  For my teacher's tomatoes, all but two were ready to be potted up and all those were potted into cool square 2 quart pots I reclaimed from Emery's Nursery in Lynnwood.

Eight of those fit in one of my white seedling trays.  Unfortunately that tray weighs about 30+ pounds.  Bringing it BACK upstairs after a day hardening off, my wife broke the tray, so now it leaks.  That means I now have to water outside and then drain the water before I bring it back inside.  Not horrible, but I need to buy a new one.  As she says, they're not designed to hold that much weight and move them around, hehe.

Notice my cottage seed containers with my one potato-leaf tomato in it?  Next year I will use only those 2 quart square pots.  They fit so much better in the trays and are taller so I can burry more into the pot.  I will have to pick up more of these since I'm not sure if I'll get these back from my teacher, hehe.  No biggie.

Ok, now that that's done, stay tuned for my great Easter post about a VERY productive Saturday!

Enjoy your garden!

  1. Your seedlings look great! yes, definitely time to get them potted up LOL!

The same thing happened to a couple of my trays -- one actually broke right in the middle! I guess I needed to just grab a handful of seedlings at a time and take them in/out instead of trying to carry them all in the trays.

  2. I double or triple stack the trays so I can carry the repotted plants inside and out. Even with that extra precaution, it pays to support the middle portion with your arm to take the weight stress off.

  3. I need to pot up almost all of my tomatoes really soon, even though I only seeded them 30 days ago. They are growing like crazy. I mainly only use square pots because they fit so nicely together and take up much less space.

I too have had problems with cracking trays and I have even dumped whole trays a few times. I try to always pick up the mesh trays when I see them at the nursery, they can handle alot more weight.
