December 5, 2008

It didn't surprise me, but this morning I headed out for work and found my car windows were frosted over.  This makes the second light frost we've had this year.  One back in mid November and another today.  I haven't had light to see how my garden is doing, but I just bet it's humming along fine.  Tomorrow I'll get out there and see for myself.  Hopefully I'll play with my kids out there as well.  I haven't spoke to my folks on any schedule for this weekend, but I'm still sick so I hope it's light.

Today was interesting at work.  I scrambled to get stuff done so I could take a half-day off to spend our annual day wandering around downtown seeing the lights and the art displays.  For years they had local artists decorate 6 foot tall fiberglassish nutcrackers.  The kids adored them.  It was great running around finding them on corner after corner.  So creative and fun.  This year all they did was shape christmas-lights around metal frames into shapes.  Cute but very industrial.  Ah well, we didn't get very far. We were too sick.  So they went home and I cut my vacation short and went back to work.  I left around 6 and boy was that a mistake.  Traffic was the worst getting out of town.

The only good part about a 2 hour bus ride is I got a ton of reading done.  Now I know all about how to build all sorts of hoop covers, cold frames and greenhouses.  The most complicated of which is a mobile greenhouse on tracks that you can use to jump start spring veggies, boost summer production, and winter garden all in adjacent gardens along the path.  Interesting, but useless to me.  And have you ever tried to figure out a complex process just by reading how to do it?  Not the easiest thing to do. Anyway, I'm hoping now that I get into something more useful.

Enjoy your garden!

  1. Frost, eh? It got really cold here last night....about 21 I think. I didn't even cover the garden. I'm just tired of protecting cabbage that's not going to form heads.....

About your comment with learning how to do something bu reading....That's how I've learned most things I do, even the complex stuff that me and pls were talking about yesterday. I get alot from reading, most of the time.

  2. We have not had a single frost yet. Amazingly enough. The proximity to the coastline makes the difference for us I guess.

What were you thinking going back to work Sinfonian? It sounds like you should have gone home to bed instead. I hope you give yourself a proper rest soon and allow your body to heal.

  4. We haven't had a single frost yet either!

Also, checked the greenhouse today and I have pea pods forming. Pretty cool to see this in December.

  5. Pretty frosty here Friday and Saturday mornings, particularly Saturday. My Winter vegetable garden is just the Fall crops I grew that last well into the Winter. Plently of Kohlrabi, Rutabaga, and Leeks out there to harvest as I choose. Beets too but they don't look so good. Plenty of Butternut squash stored away too.

  6. Well folks, you're probably right. All I am going off of is needing to scrape my windows. I never saw frost on the ground or anything. I figured if it's cold enough to frost windows it's cold enough to harm plants.

  7. We had an inch of snow over Saturday night and Sunday was -4f with the wind chill, burr.

It is nice to get out and see the festive displays this time of year. I headed to Toronto over the weekend for music, lights and fireworks. I will post some photos of it this coming week.

I hope you get better soon, you have been sick for a while. Maybe you could make some spinach smoothies :-)
